I found the class to be comprehensive yet simple. I also appreciated the 'coach approach' process that was balanced in theory/concepts, observations and reflections. I feel I have tangible tools now to help me support my children through this difficult process. I have a deeper understanding of just how much my children have been burdened the last two years and how they need both of us in their lives and to have permission to love both their parents.

12 Hour - High-Conflict Co-Parenting - Co-Parenting Without Conflict

December 6, 2023

Amy S.

I was a little defensive and cautious at first, going through family court as a survivor of abuse and co-parenting with the person who was my abuser. I have found the process to be a lot of victim blaming and turning every mistake of me trying to cope and overcome, into making me equally complicit in creating the situation at hand. Which is exhausting - to be so heavily critiqued while it feels like the person responsible for abuse is let off the hook quite a bit. Support is what survivors need. So originally, I was feeling frustrated. I am usually good at taking responsibility for my part in things, no matter how big or small my part was. But after a long time of any admitting of my mistakes weaponized against me by the former abuser and grabbed onto to further point that arrow by the courts, it has made me more hesitant in being as publicly forthcoming with my mistakes because when I had it was like the buck stopped there and no one needed to look at the other party's role. So I thought this was more of the same, but as time went on I started to value more the content with healthy communication and support and see the value of that as well as more tools for trying to work together even in challenging situations. I appreciated that and got a lot out of the course.

24 Hour - Parenting Skills - Ages 0-18

December 4, 2023

Linda C.

I appreciated that it covered areas I would've never thought of and it helped me see the point of view of the different things children go through. It was really touching to me to see some of the things that teens may be experiencing in school - like bullying and peer pressure and it helped me see some ways in which parents make get over stepped boundaries. It helped me see that teens need to be able to make decisions. I basically took this class because I spend a lot of time with my nieces and nephews and I guess I haven’t really thought about what they go through at school and how sometimes they might not tell us what they are experiencing. Also, it helped me see the difference that it makes in a child’s life to have supportive parents. A lot of my nephews and nieces are growing up without their dads or moms and I never really thought about how their dad not being in their life could feel for them. I was afraid to talk to them at times because I didn’t know what to say, so I learned that talking to other parents can help me face some of the situations I have been in and it makes me feel better to know that if I don’t know what to do, I can reach out to others and get advice. I mean, I don’t see my nephews a lot, but I know that when I'll do, I will be more prepared to to talk to them in a way where I can let them teach me how to help them and just get advice or encourage them to talk to adults when they need to.
